One of the many things I enjoy about living on Westcott is having the opportunity to watch and partake in my favorite childhood games.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures onearth, where moth and rust destroy and where thievesbreak in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also........
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."
For the past couple of weekends we've had kids over for sleepovers. I can say, with all honesty, that I've been excited about seeing their excitement about being here.
I spent all day, literally all dayMonday cleaning the house, and washing laundry from all the sleepover madness. A couple of the younger boys told me they had a blast spending the night and could not wait to do it again. So, as I finished cleaning the kitchen I decided to fix my 'sweet pea' a lunch for school. As I go into my pantry I notice the Capri Sun box was empty...Now wait a minute..didn't I just buy these a couple of weeks ago???? Did I mention they were from Sams Club..uh, yea...thatwas a lot of Capri Sun missing ,now granted one box 'sweet pea' had already run through...the other two....wow...So with a frustration inside, I call my hubbie quick to ask about the juice boxes. Now let me make this clear, the boys did not steal, they have been told that they are free to eat and drink what they may as long as they ask,the LORD knew I did not need to be there because I am sure they would have asked me and I, maybe would have answered 'no' for some selfish reasons. Anyway, all those that know me, know how frustrated I may have been. Here are my expectations...Have people over, feed them, clothe them if needed, but they cant HAVE EVERYTHING... As I sat there allowing my mind to wander....the spiritual battle had begun
"Oh God, we've opened our homes what else could you possible want"
"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
"but my baby really needed this stuff for her lunch, this happens all the time...we dont have money like that to feed people all the time with everything we have, you know LORD..."
"Nicole, I, your GOD will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus... have I not before EVERYTIME this happens??"
Lord, but this is just to hard, I dont know if I can keep doing this...its begining to be too much, somebody needs a drink, somebody needs to eat, somebody cant find their mama..."
(Nicole), My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in (your) weakness."
I begin to feel soo convicted at that moment..why, why do I keep allowing myself to go down a path that can lead to discouragement. I felt so bad about being so frustrated and very convicted over a Capri Sun ( though its not all the time Capri Suns, it has been leftovers I was attempting to save, or some drink in the fridge, or some snack in my pantry) Whatever the case, the LORD USED the Capri Sun to reveal to me, yet again how selfish I am, as well as how I am trying to serve TWOmasters..one being me. This is my heart, this is a area in my heart the LORD wants to purify for His kingdom purposes. After having this battle,I ranquickly to my bible & pulled up a sermon by John Piper. ( now why did I do that??) Pastor Piper begin to teach me what it means to lavishly give, love my guest, and live Christ like in the context of hospitality.
The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.- 1 Peter 4:7-9
I needed to learn what it meansto be a cheerful giver and not grumble at whatever it was the LORD wanted to teach me. Wasnot the LORD SOVEREIGN over this??
Something was standing in the way of my giving, of my loving on these boys and girls in the way I believe the LORD wants me to..
here is what Piper says:
Obliviousness. For whatever reason, you may have never even thought about giving away your money regularly. It never occurred to you that this is part of worship (verse 1). The height of virtue for you is, “Thou shalt not steal.” Good start. But now God is calling you to hear the New Testament command. Not just: Don’t take what’s not yours, but give what is yours. “Contribute to the needs of the saints.” “Let him who contributes do so generously.” Don’t be oblivious anymore.
Carelessness. Perhaps we are not oblivious. We know this is what people who love Christ do. But we just never seem to get around to planning how much and when and where to give. Things just slide. God has appointed this message to bring you to a critical new place in your walk with him this week. Don’t be careless. Be thoughtful. Be intentional.
Greed—the desire to keep more than we need. The spirit of greed groans when it gives. It thinks of all the things we could buy if we didn’t give. The biblical alternative to this is not disciplined groaning. The alternative is a new heart and the joy of being free from the bondage of greed. It’s the glad experience that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Don’t live in the bondage of greed. Be free.
Fear that we won’t have what we need. Fear is the flip side of greed. Greed focuses on what we don’t have but would like to have. Fear focuses on the consequences of not having what we need to have. The answer to greed is the pleasure of Christ’s presence. The answer to fear is the certainty of Christ’spromise. Don’t live in fear. Be satisfied with Christ, and trust his promises.
yeaaaa, that last one has my name written all over it.. I was not trusting the LORD and how he was going to provide what we needed as a family. I fail at this soo many times in the midst of living incarnationally.
Even when it comes to being hospitable at times.. I get in this runt of not wanting people over.. again I am not saying that its wrong to say, "not today we area going to rest," I am talking about just the sinnful selfish heart that has other motives...
Here is what Piper Says:
"What about hospitality? What stands in the way of being as hospitable as we should be? Here there a whole cluster of fears. Fear that people will just take too much time if they come over, or if they stay here for a season. Fear that they will think you don’t keep house very well. They might open that closet door or look in the kid’s bedroom. Fear that they will mess up your house—your nice carpet and nice furniture and nice linens. Fear that they will be hard to talk to and conversations will be awkward. And so on. You can see the bondage of fear so many Christians seem to live in."
I know I have once lived in this type of fear and I am soo ready to be free. I am thankful for this lesson, and I know the temptation will continue until the LORD has my undivided heart, my possessions, my money and my trust in Him. I like how Randy Alcorn puts it : "“God prospers me not to raise my standard of living, but to raise my standard of giving”.
Oh Father, may I give joyously, always remembering how much was given for me. The mercies of God were bought by the blood of Jesus, and they are new every morning with fresh generosity and fresh hospitality. This is how we become generous and hospitable. We enjoy and expect God’s lavish help in all our giving and all our hospitality.
"Lavish giving and open homes are close to the center of life in Christ. The reasons we don’t open our checkbooks and homes as often as we should are rooted in the bondage of fear and greed. The remedy is the pleasure of Christ’s presence and the certainty of Christ’s promise. My God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Our reward is the display of God’s glory, the good of others, and the joy of treasuring Christ together forever. Therefore I exhort you, “Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality"- John Piper

Hear the call of the kingdom
Lift your eyes to the King
Let His song rise within you
As a fragrant offering
Of how God rich in mercy
Came in Christ to redeem
All who trust in His unfailing grace
Hear the call of the Kingdom
To be children of light
With the mercy of heaven
The humility of Christ
Walking justly before Him
Loving all that is right
That the life of Christ may shine through us
King of Heaven we will answer the call
We will follow bringing hope to the world
Filled with passion, filled with power to proclaim
Salvation in Jesus' name
Hear the call of the Kingdom
To reach out to the lost
With the Father's compassion
In the wonder of the cross
Bringing peace and forgiveness
And a hope yet to come
Let the nations put their trust in Him

Anywho.. will update you on that next week...
Oh...i got a text message from one of the SLAM! girls informing me that she was serious and that she wanted to know if I could do a "bible study session" with her...I then begin to inform her about the commitment level of meeting with me..I also then asked her how long was she interested in this "bible study" ..she then tells me ..."Forever Mrs King...if that's possible"
I have to confess.. I have not always did right by these girls....In the midst of my sadness, and burden over them not wanting to follow the LORD .. I have sinned against them and have had to ask their forgiveness many times..... I have times manipulated them..... I have avoided them and just wanted in my heart to seek revenge... So, I knew when it came time for me to end our time together that it was really not just for them but for me as well to get right with the LORD and allow HIM to work in their hearts, to ALLOW him to reveal HIMSELF to them in ways I could not.... The LORD has taught me sooo much through this...I have failed and did not do things right.. but I have LEARNED and I am continuing to LEARN what to do and what not to do when you are ministering in a urban setting...
I was MOST encouraged in my time in the word yesterday as I was reminded of God being a GOD who is ABLE...
In Jeremiah 32:17 we read 'Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your outstretched arm. NOTHING is too hard for you'
This time going into meeting with this girl ( and LORD willing the others too in the near future) I can rest that there is NOTHING that GOD cannot do...God can give us guidance when we have no idea what to do....he can provide for all of our NEEDS in answer to our prayers.... HE is able to SAVE and call home any wayward child.....HE IS ABLE TO GIVE COURAGE IN THE FACE OF all and any fears we have!! Rejoice friends!!
OUR GOD IS ABLE!!

Being sick, I've had NOTHING but time to think... In my time of reflection, I have thought about what the LORD has done in my heart and Kevin's-- as to why we would want to do a ministry as such. Our ministry is going through some serious growing pains at this moment, so many transitions are on the verge of happening..yet, in it all, we are still unsure as to what the LORD's plans are... I woke up this morning thinking, " ok LORD, things are crazy right now, and its easy to rejoice about something when things are going the way you want..help me to rejoice through the days of uncertainty, and confusion..."
One way I want to bring myself back to the right perspective is to think of the many reasons I believe Kevin and I wanted to be apart of CGM.....through much prayer and consideration over time these are the reasons we have talked about recently, as well as in the beginning as to why WE made the decision to do incarnational ministry:
1. We wanted to SEE and experience JESUS in a way we had never seen him before.
2 We moved among the under resourced to LEARN the gospel.
3. We wanted to "join the lives" of our neighbors instead of just minister to them.
4. It was the clearest way WE saw how to apply John 1:14
5.We did not want "distance" to come between those we minister to.
6. We saw this as clear application to Luke 14:12-14.
7.We wrestled in prayer and the LORD made it CLEAR through many friends, sermons, and bible passages as to what we should do.
8. Because safety is a mirage and we wanted to take risk for the sake of the Kingdom and others knowing Jesus.
9. Micah 6:8 is the BEAT of our heart
10. We too came from such neighborhoods, and we wanted to be that light of HOPE to those who are growing up in similar situations as we did. We wanted to be a example of how the LORD makes all things NEW!!!
11. We considered our lives NO LONGER as our own.
12. We wanted to have the privilege of coming and telling those in our hood about the dignity they were created with.
13. We wanted the let the fatherless, and orphans, and widows know they are not forgotten.
14.We have a HUGE heart for RACIAL RECONCILIATION within the city of Montgomery!
15. We wanted to begin to be Christians again.
16. WE LOVE THE KELLYS!!! seriously, we shared the SAME VISION THEY DID and are thrilled to be working along side of them, and we are so thankful the LORD gave them this vision.
17. WE can live out Isaiah 58
18. We can live out the totality of the gospel not just the part on personal sin, but the side about the social evils that happen day to day as well.
19. We wanted to be exactly were we KNEW JESUS would be if He was still walking on earth today
20. We wanted to kill our love for this world, and set our hearts on things above
21.We knew loving GOD and learning how to love our neighbors would somehow transform our lives....and it HAS!
22. We wanted to be apart of the Lord's plan to REBUILD MONTOGOMERY
23. We have learned and believe the gospel is WHOLISTIC.... it does not single out the spiritual or physical needs and speak to those. We saw God calling us to share the gospel through evangelism, social action, economic development, and justice.
24. WE did not believe in the gospel that reconciled only people to God..but the TRUE GOSPEL that RECONCILES people to GOD and PEOPLE TO PEOPLE. The TRUE GOSPEL breaks down every racial, economic, and ethnic barrier.
25. We wanted to be apart of JUSTICE coming back to a undeserved neighborhood. ( we, God's people bring this when we use our resources)
26. We wanted to become all things to all people so that we might win some for the sake of the Gospel.
27. Because at the foot of the Cross we have so much in common with the prostitute, the crack addict, the fornicator, the molester....we all are in need of this wonderful SAVIOR
28. We wanted to take on the sufferings of the oppressed
29. Because PERFECT LOVE CAST OUT ALL FEAR
30. We wanted to follow and worship the JESUS OF the SCRIPTURES not the American jesus...We wanted to SHOUT THE GOSPEL WITH OUR LIVES!!
I could go on..but i have things to do... (haaa!!) God is FAITHFUL isn't HE, I know that all that I have written on this list has nothing to do with us, but everything to do with the LORD and the way he has CHOSEN to use our lives to bring HIM GLORY...and that's all we want.. CGM has nothing to do with the staff members, programs, bible studies,...those things are just what they are tools, tools for our community to KNOW and SEE the One who longs for them to see HIS FACE, and for them to be reconciled to HIMSELF... I thank the LORD for where we are, and as I have said so, so, many times, I would not change it for anything in the world!!!
**Kevin and I are on our way to a couples retreat...would you pray for our time away
Have a Thankful weekend friends!!
"Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear...."
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.
"All these I have kept since I was a boy," he said.
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

In a world of such overabundance -- what does the Lord require?
When we can do so much more than merely give -- what does the Lord require?
To come across a boy on the street -- To know he is somewhere in the world-- what does the Lord require?
In a world full of such suffering -- what does the Lord require?
He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
