Rethinking ministry to the poor??

Praise the Lord! I am running into some many people that are rethinking ministry to the poor and would like to know where to start. I know for us, it was all about getting counsel from those who have been doing this thing a lot longer than we have. We also began to educate ourselves by reading numerous books authored by those who are in urban ministry. Here are a list of books I would HIGHLY recommend you read:

The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical-by Shane Claiborne

Restoring At-Risk Communities: Doing It Together and Doing It Right-John M. Perkins

Free at Last?: The Gospel in the African-American Experience-Carl F. Ellis

Compassion, Justice, and the Christian Life: Rethinking ministry to the poor- Robert D. Lupkin

Going Global: Beyond the Boundaries- Carl F. Ellis

Theirs is the Kingdom-Celebrating the Gospel in Urban America
-Robert D. Lupton

A Thousand Resurrections-Maria Garriott (MUST READ FOR THE WIVES-my favorite!!)

The Heart of Racial Justice: How Soul Change Leads to Social Change-Brenda Salter Mcneil & Rick Richardson

Return flight: Community development through reneighboring our cities -Robert D. Lupton

Divided by Faith: Evangelical Religion and the Problem of Race in America-Michael Emerson

Reconciliation Blues: A Black Evangelical's Inside View of White Christianity-Edward Gilbreath

Let Justice Roll Down- John M. Perkins

On Being Black and Reformed: A New Perspective on the African-American Christian Experiencee- Anthony J. Carter

**Here is the link to a conference that we( Kings and Kellys) attend every October. This conference is specifically for those who are considering urban work and for those who are already doing it. If you have the opportunity, please COME! The Lord used this conference to seal it for us. We knew after leaving this AMAZING time of fellowship, that this was what the LORD wanted us to do. (smiling)
