He executes justice for the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free, the LORD gives sight to the blind, he lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves those who live justly. The LORD watches over the immigrant and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. -Psalm 146:7-9

Of First Importance

One of the hardest things about being a part of urban ministry is being a WIFE and MOM. ( wait, does that make sense?) Let me explain. For me, now I am only going to talk about me, not the million other women who are doing this.. For me, for one, I have such a huge heart for ministry!! Like, really it has been a prayer for years that I would be a missionary... ha! I laugh because, I remember before I got married, I was on my first summer project and Shane Claiborne came to speak and share with us about his new ministry in Philadelphia. I was like, YES, LORD!!! I WILL GO!!!"( in my all dramatic voice) I remember taking the ministry info and presenting it to one of staff guys and asking him to pray for me and seeking to to hear from him his wisdom on what I should do! LOL! I was determined to be a missionary!! LOL! I remember telling Kevin and he was like, Girl, please, you are not going to be a missionary, because we are getting married!" I was like huh?? Later I thought," Clearly, Lord you need to do something with him because he is trippin!"

Well, clearly, as you can see, who won that fight!

I wanted nothing more than to be with this man, I knew He would be a great husband, leader and friend to me. I really was excited about being His helper!! I still had this thing, this grip in my heart to do full time missions. Not sure why, it just made sense that as a christian you would devote all of your life to serving the LORD.( as if other believers not on staff somewhere were not doing that) I know I had a lot of maturing to do.. I had to grow to understand that we are all missionaries no matter where we live, at the time the LORD wanted me to understand that my FIRST ministry, and priority might I add, was to my husband. That was hard but I got it! Then we had kaiya!! If you want to know the story behind our struggle with infertility read that here.

But, kevin did not know at the time I was pleading and begging the LORD to call us into full time missions. ( heheh, Got cha brother!!) Anyway, I spent maybe the first couple of years trying to convince him we should go on staff with the college ministry we met through. He would laugh it off at times, but then it begin to not be funny, it was starting to bother HIm, and so I had to let go. I never wanted him to feel like he wasn't doing what God wanted him to do at the time in our lives. As a helper I am called to follow him, not him follow me. ( Genesis 2,3 1 Corinthians 11:3;7-12) I got it now.

All that to say, kevin use to say there were three things that he would NEVER do, that was, 1. Raise Support. 2. Go on staff with a Ministry. 3. Move to the Westside of Montgomery.

Wellll, I'll be slithering snakes...he has done all three of the above and look were we are now!! ( got cha again brother!! This prayer thing really works! LOL)

Ok, foreal, I am at awe at how the LORD has given us both the desires of our hearts and has brought our family to west Montgomery for such a time as this. My struggle at times is not wanting my child or my husband to feel they are not a priority for me. It so easy for me because of my personality, and heart to invest more time in these girls or kids in my neighborhood then my own family. I am thankful because I have a husband who will check me at any given moment if that happens. I am saying all that to say, PLEASE KEEP ME IN YOUR PRAYERS.
I want to love on my neighbors by showing them the ORDER in which GOD has established and set up the home. Hospitality must FIRST and FOREMOST begin in your OWN house, with your husband, and your children. Kevin, I tell you, the LORD has given me a serious man! I love him to death. He is always encouraging me to do what the LORD wants me to do...But do it in the order and way that GOD ordains for those things to be done! I love my family, I would not want to bring shame to the gospel by not placing them first! (Titus 2) A TRUE WOMAN takes care of and looks over the affairs of her home diligently.

Its hard, that constant tug between living here and keeping your families together. Please pray for 'hood wives and husbands' everywhere!!!

Acceptable Worship

Isaiah 58

True Fasting

1 "Shout it aloud, do not hold back.
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion
and to the house of Jacob their sins.
2 For day after day they seek me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
and has not forsaken the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near them.

3 'Why have we fasted,' they say,
'and you have not seen it?
Why have we humbled ourselves,
and you have not noticed?'
"Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
and exploit all your workers.

4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.

5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed
and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD ?

6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness [a] will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
"If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,

10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.

11 The LORD will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.

12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

13 "If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath
and from doing as you please on my holy day,
if you call the Sabbath a delight
and the LORD's holy day honorable,
and if you honor it by not going your own way
and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,

14 then you will find your joy in the LORD,
and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land
and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob."
The mouth of the LORD has spoken.

From One Hood To Another

Grandma was in the kitchen cooking as usual as I sat on the floor playing. Though we lived in the city, it was clear she had those southern roots in her, because, baby... you could smell it in the food!! :) As she worked over the stove, I hear the patter of feet behind me at the back door. I turn around and see a strange man standing in our kitchen..what he wanted..I wasn't sure, but in the Englewood community if a strange man was walking into your home, it meant trouble,uh, death at times. I turn to look for grandma and she was gone. I look back at the strange man, and he is running out of door, because of the weapon grandma has return with in the kitchen to scare him off. I cant believe I still have memories of my old hood. It reminds me soo much of the place I am now, Just A LOT WORST, so WORST.

As I checked my email earlier I saw on yahoo a news report about the family of academy award winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson. Click here to read more about this tragic story. That was my hood, that's where I am from Englewood. Englewood once known as "Junction Grove", is located on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois .Englewood was the home of Dr. H. H. Holmes, one of the first serial murderers in America. His hotel located at Wallace and 63rd streets was the scene of most of his crimes.
Today, it has been suggested that Englewood is making attempts to gentrify. Also from what I have read, many of its buildings are falling apart and 43% of the residents live below the poverty line. Over 700 murders have occurred there in only 10 years.

This is where I am from. This is where I was born and raised. I just would have never thought that the LORD would bring me back to a place so similar, and give me such a heavy burden for the people in it. As I watched news reports today about this community my heart just ached, my stomach turned, and I just cried out..one in thankfulness and praise over how the LORD has saved me from my sin..thoughts of 'what if I still lived there and didn't know who Jesus was, what would my life look like??' ( because I tell you, I was as HOOD as they get, you hear me!! lol) I was so humbled at that..

Then I began to think about how there are people there looking, searching and crying out for the hope of the gospel that they so desperately need... I know the LORD cares for this community and all of the hoods abroad... I look at some of the kids in my hood and I see so much of who I was growing up...what a testimony of HOPE, and REDEMPTION the LORD has given me to share with all.. Pray that I handle it with care, and wisdom

Would you pray with me for the Hudson Family?? Pray that His comfort, peace and salvation fall upon them during this tragedy. Pray that the LORD would send some 'beautiful feet' to share HIS love and all who hear the gospel would taste and see that HE is good.

ps-- did I mention the reason why we had to leave the hood was because I burned the house down...really..it was no more. All of my family had to live in different place over the next 3 or 4 months. That house fire is what landed us into the South burbs of the city.. Yes, I am one serious NEW CREATION!

I just wanted to share with you this email I received from Ben Washer over at Reach Records. I am amazed at the LORD and the heart he has for all people!! His desire is for all to come to the full understanding of the gospel! I am so thankful that guys like Lecrae are willing to preach the whole counsel of GOD and Rebel against the culture! Please keep this fan in your prayers

Hey Bloggers,
Thank you for all the support of the Rebel album. So far the response has been amazing with the CD getting in more hands than we ever thought. Your help in getting the word out through your blog sites are instrumental in letting the world know!
I wanted to share below an incredible testimony of how the Lord is using the Gospel communicated through the album. This kind of feedback helps fuel us to keep pressing on and sharing the name of Christ. Amazing how the Lord can use "Rebel" to give others a confrontation with the Savior.
Hey Lecrae, I don't know if you check this or not. But I just heard your new album front to back. I'm not gonna lie to you. I'm kinda drunk right now. Ive been battling with the existence of God, and with trying to fill my life with things of this world and they weren't getting the job done that I wanted them too. So I began to give up. I had thoughts of Suicide. I didn't want to be alive.I started drinking after a year break from it. Tonight or soon to come was the time I was gonna end me. I guess I hadn't done it yet because I had a gut feeling that there is something missing that I haven't tried yet to fill me with. I heard 'Indwelling Sin' and it saved me. It straight up saved my life. I heard the song as you having a conversation with Sin. I don't know if that's how you wrote it. But after hearing you shut down sin in that song, and rebelling against it, gave me a spark of hope. I felt dirty all over, like I was covered in mud. I got in the shower (but you cant wash off alcohol sadly enough) and for the 40 min I was in there I just let the water hit me as I thought. And I found a comfort place in my heart to make the decisions I need to to be happy and live a better full life. Thank you again bro....You are a savior to me....but you have helped me get one step closer to opening up to the true savior...again.

Beautiful Feet

It just humbles the mess out of me to know, as dirty as I am.. as sinful as I am in my heart, the LORD still looks at these feet of mine and call them beautiful. I just dont understand why he would want to use me.. I am so unworthy of carrying around a message so powerful, so freeing, so full of MERCY, GRACE, and Power! I know none of this would be possible without the blood of CHRIST covering mem and I know that it is the GOSPEL in and of it self that is powerful, not me...

Listen carefully to the video below, and remember to stop the music player over to your left.

Isaiah 6:5
"Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts."

Isaiah 52
6 Therefore my people will know my name;
therefore in that day they will know
that it is I who foretold it.
Yes, it is I."

7 How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace,
who bring good tidings,
who proclaim salvation,
who say to Zion,
"Your God reigns!"

Willing To Serve

Hurt, Ashamed, Lonely, Angry, and Frustrated is how she feels. "K" is 19 and has 1 precious little girl whom she loves, and adores and takes very good care of. I remember at one of our bible studies her prayer request was to pray for her relationship with her mom. You see, "K" every sense she was 16 has taken care of her 4 year old brother. Really, from what we hear she has practically and still does raise him. She feeds him, buys his clothing, makes sure she is enrolled in school, and she is the primary disciplinary at her home. Her mom treats her different from her younger sibling because they have different dads. Her mother once told her, " I love my son more than I love you, and it will always be him before you or your baby". Her home from what she has told me is filled with verbal abuse. Last night I got a text from one of the girls telling me that "K" mom has kicked her and her baby out of the house because she could not sit with her little brother. Would you please pray for "K".. pray for her salvation, pray for she and her moms relationship, and pray as well for Kevin and I as we pray and figure out how the LORD would want us to serve this young mom.

God has promised that He is Good and upright and Therefore He will instructs sinners in the way. -Psalm 32
There is no room for us to worry, or fret, GOD Is GOOD and HE will accomplish all that HE has planned for this young mom and her child.

MIAMI Bound!!

Well, I am off again..this time to Miami, for the 19th Annual CCDA Conference.
This is a conference where urban ministry staff from everywhere come together to inspire both new and experienced Christian Community Development (CCD) practitioners,as well as celebrate their calls and accomplishments. We are taught the best CCDA practices...we get a chance to network, exchange information, fellowship, and those skills needed to develop restored communities are sharpened.

I've been anxiously awaiting for this conference all year. The LORD knows, where we are in ministry we could use this time of refreshment! I will begin to blog again when we return. ( sunday :)

Have a thankful, trusting in His Sovereignty week!

What a Delight To Serve

"When we work as unto the Lord we serve others even more excellently than if serving them were our main goal. Working as unto the Lord does not mean serving God instead of other people.............

Whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord and not for men…. You are serving the Lord Christ.-- Colossians 3:23-24

But we’re not doing it for them. We do it for the Lord.
We serve God by serving others. We love him by loving others.
We are not standing in the middle of two masters with each calling our name. We do not have to turn our backs on one to follow the other.
No, God stands on the far side of the other people in our lives. We can only reach out to him if we reach out to them. We live for them to live for him.
They’ll receive blessing and we’ll receive Jesus." - John Piper

Here are just some fun pics of our time with the girls in our neighborhood..some are bible study pics and some were taken today on our trip to B'ham! The girls had a blast being introduced to something outside of the hood! The LORD ultimately provided and gave the idea for this trip, and we are thankful!

We surrender and say , Yes, Lord!

Please visit my other blog and enjoy the pics of my trip to Chicago.
To God be the Glory!

Don't Waste Your Life

Suffer/ Yeah do it for Christ if you trying to figure what to do with your life/ if you making money hope you doing it right because the money is Gods you better steward it right/ stay focused if you aint got no ride/ your life aint wrapped up in what you drive/ the clothes you wear the job you work/ the color your skin naw we Christian first/ people living life for a job/ make a lil money start living for a car/ get em a house a wife kids and a dog/ when they retire they living high on the hog/ but guess what they didn't ever really live at all/ to live is Christ yeah that's Paul I recall/ to die is gain so for Christ we give it all/ he's the treasure you'll find in the mall/ Your money your singleness marriage talent and time/ they were loaned to you to show the world that Christ is Divine/ that's why it's Christ in my rhymes/ That's why it's Christ all the time/ my whole world is built around him He's the life in my lines/ I refused to waste my life/ he's too true ta chase that ice/ heres my gifts and time cause I'm constantly trying to be used to praise the Christ/ If he's truly raised to life/ then this news should change your life/ and by his grace you can put your faith in place that rules your days and nights.

This is the prayer of my heart...I just lost it today as I was in the car listening to the song you hear playing on this page. "Lord please, please prevent me from wasting my life"... Then I begin to sob even more as I thought about the 10 girls we meet with on Wednesday nights.. What a wasteful life they are living... my heart aches, longs, and screams for the LORD to RESCUE THEM!
"How long, O LORD, will I call for help, And You will not hear? I cry out to You, "Violence!" Yet You do not save." Hab. 1:2
What do you do, how do you watch those around you that you love live a life that is perishing and so wasteful????? I am so discouraged, but I know that it has NOTHING TO DO WITH ME, I have a lot of talking aloud to myself to do tonight.. The Truth of the matter is ALL the circumstance in a believers and nonbelievers life comes out of our SOVEREIGN Lord's hand, for in Romans we read that ...." O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever."

Oh, LORD, help me to remember this.

F.A.I.T.H.- F.abulous A.dventures I.n T.rusting H.im. ...I heard that spoke today at my little girl school during her chapel service and I nearly laughed and fell out from the encouragement!
Fab-U-LOUS!! yes, that is what this walk with the LORD is, yes, it can be challenging at times, but, its all about YOUR perspective of things ( are your thoughts derived from scripture or the world, or are you just selfish??)

I believe FAITH is what is encouraging me to continue to fight in love for the girls in my hood. They have been through so much..so many miscarriages, so many abusive relationships...so many molested by their fathers, one girl parents are divorced due to the dad sleeping with his daughter, numerous times. These girls are on the hunt for love, significance, TRUTH, fulfillment.. yet, I can be selfish and times and forget that I have what their hearts long for, what their souls cant rest without having. Its so easy in urban ministry to forget that the LORD is at work when we don't see results as fast as we want to see them...when the girls don't respond as we would like, when a parent wont step in and keep her child out of the streets all times of the night...when mothers leave their children at my home, with no baths, nothing eaten all day, when their sons turn out to be the drug addicts and/or drug sellers in our area..

All of these are just adventures, yes, crazy, SOVEREIGN , PREDESTINED ADVENTURES in TRUSTING HIM...

"S" has always stood out as a leader to me. She is very wise beyond her years, I think...She thinks alot, she listens really well during bible study...She called me late last night to ask me to pray for her, she was having a rough week. To suspect and find your "baby Daddy" cheating is so hurtful...I was so proud to hear how she handled the situation..She assured her baby daddy that she was a different person and that she did not want to handle this situation like she would have in the past. She proceeded to tell him how hurt she was, YET, she explained to him that this just may have been the LORD making it easy for her to not practice sexual immorality with him any longer( she really said that to HIM!!) She explained to him that she was not going down that road anymore and that she was CHANGING.

That was the LORD, I am so thankful to the FATHER to graciously show me that there is one heart that HE is CHANGING..( even if HE had never shown me that.. I should still TRUST HIM and continue to sow seeds of FAITH.)
"S" is changing her future, she is aiming to work hard at ending the ongoing cycle of teen parenting...She wants her daughter to have a family and future she never had...Yes, i believe the LORD is that powerful that HE can and HE is doing just that for her...He never sleeps, nor slumber, and as she calls out to HIM, HE WILL TELL her great and unsearchable things that she does not even know..
Please continue to pray for all these girls.. That they would understand the truth of the scriptures and that they would be apart of a generation that that practices sexual purity for the glory of GOD! .Change takes time and patience, pray that Delta and I will remember that as we fight to lay our lives down for those that have not yet tasted and seen that the LORD is good.

I am headed to Chicago for the True Woman '08 Conference, so I will be away from my blog the rest of the week...Please pray for my trip and have a wonderful, and restful week. :)

I've Been Tagged!!

I was tagged by my sweet friend Rachel ...here are 5 "weird" things about me. (um, and very embarrassing I might add)

1. I sucked my thumb up until I got married..( uh, yea..moving on)

2. I cook ALL of my food FROZEN ...uh, yeaaa. I dont do the unthawing thing..and believe it or not, it always comes out very tender!!

3. I count all the lines and curves on my cabinets, as well as all the lines in my tile on my floor LOL...( uh, yea, your mouth is hanging open) please don't have me committed :)

4. I love pickles with Now & Laters or a peppermint inside them! ( ok , not weird to all my hood peeps)

5. Spend toooooo much time in the bathroom....Reading (lol)

OKAY..wow... now that I have just exposed myself.. HAVE A gREAT WEEKEND FRIENDS!!!

These are my 5 weird things...DELTA, tag you are next!

There Is No Such Thing As A Nobody

As I pulled up in front of Delta's house the other day, there were so many addicts just walking around, talking and hanging out in front of one of the many drug houses that are in our neighborhood. As I sat in my car, I was listening to the new Lecrae cd ( go get it if you haven't already :) ) and while I sat there this song began to play about who we are in Christ. I begin to get sad but yet, encouraged. Sad, because the image bearers that walk amongst me have no idea who they were created to be. The crack, and heroin and alcohol have became some sort of fulfilment. Because they have no idea of what and who's they are they have resorted to other things... I begin to beg the LORD to reveal himself to them, to show them who they are and what things were suppose to be like for them before the fall.. They are not just A DRUG ADDICT, or A PROSTITUTE, but a beautiful creation of a loving KING who desires and longs for them to know who HE is... They are so important to HIM, so they should be accepted and loved by us as well

The encouragement that came across me was I don't have to believe the lie of the culture that I am anything outside of CHRIST!
I must confess I have struggled so much in the past with how i dress, what designer brand of clothing my child wears, where we live as a family, what talents or gifts I have, how I talk, how I wear my make up, on and on. Is that really who I am??? do I really have to keep up with the culture when it comes to what is the latest style or home accessories ??? What a depressing down ward spiral that is to keep up with. In all our hearts we all long for some acceptance.. we look for it in others, our spouses, our friends, our mentors, ect.. But CHRIST CAME TO put an END to the LONG, painful look for self worth. Those of us who believe in HIM our worth is found in HIM. So what if I am not KNOWN as the girl that rocks the best designer brands, or who's child wears all the latest fashions in shoes and accessories , the woman who's house looks as if it came straight out of the pottery barn catalog, or who drives the latest car. Just as Delta and I talked about with the girls this past wed for bible study.. we were all created in the IMAGE OF GOD, FULLY LOVED, & FULLY EXCEPTED. We are God's little princess who shall not long or want for anything to fulfill them because HE IS OUR GREAT SHEPHERD! I was telling Delta the other day that I feel so FREE! I feel as if such a huge weight has been lifted off of me. Our prayer is that the LORD would continue to reveal to the girls we meet with as well as our own children where their identity is found. To encourage you, below is the song that was playing in my car.. what a relief it is to be in Jesus!!!!

Identity by Lecrae Ft. D.A.Truth & J.R.

I'm am not the house I live in/ I'm not the car I drive , NO, I'm not the job I work you, you cant define my worth, by nothing on God's green earth, my Identity is found in CHRIST, its found in CHRIST

Genesis 1
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

Ephesians 1
3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he[c] predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 8that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9And he[d] made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.
11In him we were also chosen,[e] having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.

1 Peter 1:18
18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
